Xinhua News Agency has announced this week that the world’s first female AI news anchor is expected to make her professional debut during the upcoming meetings of China’s national legislature in March.
The female-gendered system has been developed in collaboration with Chinese search engine company Soguo and has been named Xin Xiaomeng.
Xinhua said a satisfactory response has been achieved from their AI presenter so far. After only about 5 months of service, Qiu Hao has already presented 3,400 reports and has racked up 10,000 minutes of screen time. Such systems also make it possible for one presenter to present two different stories at the same time to different TVs or displays.
In November 2018, China introduced the world’s first male AI news anchor, Qiu Hao that could mimic human facial expressions and mannerisms while reading out reports.
The AI anchor, developed by state news agency Xinhua and tech firm Sogou Inc, was on display at the World Internet Conference in the eastern Chinese town of Wuzhen.
The anchor, modelled on real-life Chinese news reader Qiu Hao is part of a major push by China to advance its prowess in AI technology, from surveillance equipment to self-driving cars.
